Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for Individuals and Couples

I received my doctorate from the California Institute of Integral Studies. In addition, I have extensive training from the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. My work is greatly influenced by and infused with my 30 years of study and practice of Buddhist meditation. This is my third career. I started out as a mathematician, graduating from Harvard College and Columbia University. I was also a professional photographer, spending years learning how to help people, sometimes in very difficult situations, reveal themselves and see themselves. I see psychotherapy as a two-person meditation. In each session, we both pay close attention to our sensations, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings. The focus of our awareness is you, and especially what is going on for you beneath the surface, the aspects of your life that haven't received enough care, for example, the parts of your psyche shaped by relationships with early caregivers.. It can be the richest exploration of yourself that you have ever engaged in. This process can help you face life outside of therapy with the same clarity. I have special expertise in helping people affected by loss, including people dealing with grief, facing death, or coping with illness, but if you think of your own situation you might realize that loss is playing a role in your search for a therapist. After all, any change we have gone through or need to go through will involve the loss of the way things have been. I can help if you are struggling with: depression, anxiety, panic or other mood issues; aging or life-threatening illness; relationship difficulties or emotionally-based sexual problems; long standing personality problems; or the consequences of living with serious mental disorders. I also work with people who are searching for growth or feeling the absence of a spiritual center in their lives. I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the California Psychological Association, and the Marin County Psychological Association.
