The Children's Hour - Ross Valley Players
Written by Lillian Hellman
Directed by Neiry Rojo

Showcasing the destructive power of lies, the play depicts the experiences of two longtime friends that run a boarding school for girls. The two women are accused of conducting an illicit lesbian relationship by a bratty, compulsively lying student to disastrous effect..

Banned from stages in London and Boston when it first debuted in 1934, The Children’s Hour remains a significant milestone in American letters and a vital contribution to the contemporary American theatre repertoire.

Lillian Hellman was a smoker, a drinker, a lover, and a fighter who maintained a social and political life as large and as restless as her talent and her plays were a constant challenge to injustice. She began writing after being encouraged by her paramour, the writer Dashiell Hammett. Her first play, The Children’s Hour (1934), was an enormous hit on Broadway, and she followed it with In Days to Come (1936) and The Little Foxes (1939). She continued to write plays and increase her political activism in the 1940s and 1950s, eventually obtaining blacklist status for her leftist leanings.
